The Crossref Curriculum

Join as a member

You may want to join Crossref directly, or you can consider joining via one of our Sponsors. These Sponsors can provide technical, billing, language, and administrative support to members. They are permitted to charge for the services they provide.

If you join Crossref via a Sponsor, you still have full voting rights just like any direct member, and are still responsible for fulfilling the member obligations - you just have help in doing this from your Sponsor.

Once you’ve decided which type of membership is right for you and are sure that you can fulfil the member obligations, you’re ready to apply.

Apply to be a direct member

To join as a direct member, you need to be sure that you can fulfil the membership terms (which include a series of obligations for members), and that you (or a supplier you work with) will be able to register your content with us through one of our content registration methods. If you plan to work with a third party (such as a platform provider or typesetter) to register your content with Crossref, let us know when you apply.

You’ll need to provide us with contact details for (ideally) at least three different people at your organization to undertake five important roles. These are key to making your relationship with Crossref and the rest of the community a success, so do think carefully about who will take on each of these roles.

  • The Primary contact - this person will be our key contact at your organization. They receive product and service updates, and we contact about things like changes to terms or service agreements. They also receive our monthly resolution reports showing failed resolutions on your DOIs. (Those of you who have been members for a while will know this contact as the Business contact)
  • The Voting contact - this person will vote in our Board elections. The Voting contact is often the same person as the Primary contact
  • The Technical contact - this person will receive technical updates, DOI error reports, and conflict reports to help you solve problems with your content quickly
  • The Metadata contact - this person will be responsible for fixing any metadata errors that are spotted by the scholarly community
  • The Billing contact - this person will receive invoices from us and pay the annual membership and ongoing content registration fees.

If you’re ready to join as a direct member, simply complete our online form.

We’ll take a look at your application within two working days. We may need to come back to you with a couple of questions. We then send you a pro-rated membership order (this is basically an invoice) for your first year of membership.

Once our billing team confirms that this has been paid, we’ll send you your new Crossref DOI prefix and username and password within two working days. Once you’ve received these, you’ll be able to start registering your content straight away.

Our replies come from the email address member@crossref.org. Please add this email address to your contacts list, whitelist it, or add it to your safe senders list to make sure that you receive our replies.

Apply to join as a member through a Sponsor

To join as a member through a Sponsor, you need to be sure that you can fulfil the membership terms (which include a series of obligations for members) and you need to find a Sponsor to work with. Take a look at our list of Sponsors to find a suitable match. You need to make contact with them to discuss working together. If you both agree, the Sponsor will provide you with a link to an application form to accept our membership terms and become a member - it’s important that you use the specific link provided by your Sponsor and don’t try and find an application form yourself.

Upon receipt of your application, we usually provide your Sponsor with your prefix, username and password within two working days. We may need to ask you a couple of follow up questions by email.

Our replies come from the email address member@crossref.org. Please add this email address to your contacts list, whitelist it, or add it to your safe senders list to make sure that you receive our replies.

Working with us as a Sponsor, service provider, or metadata retriever

As well as our members, there are a variety of other organizations which work with Crossref to deposit and retrieve metadata, including Sponsoring Organizations, service providers, and metadata retrievers. Find out more about other ways of working with us.
